[heɪ jɑɫ]

I’m a Lecturer in the linguistics department at Rice University. I earned my PhD in 2022 from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

I’m a phonetician and phonologist whose work incorporates both lab and field methodologies. I do fieldwork in Vanuatu, and laboratory research on syllable coordination. My dissertation used Electromagnetic Articulography to examine the relationship between sonority and timing in syllable onsets in Georgian.

I love producing speech sounds, perceiving speech sounds, and exchanging meta-speech sounds with people!

In my free time I like watching horror movies and taking pictures of cool things in my backyard. >D
